There are the usual requirements for Thanksgiving foods – the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes (always Steve’s domain), the mountain cranberry sauce (with a speech about exactly where the cranberries in question had been picked the previous August), and lots and lots of pies.
But there is little unanimity among the clan – in 2017, I cooked no fewer than four versions of stuffing (vegetarian, gluten-free, stuffing without onions, and stuffing with everything). And, of course there are the arguments around orange vegetables – are they an anathema, or a delight? Betsy’s squash soup, a feature for a number of years, had many believing in the importance of the orange vegetable.
Pies
Judy’s Pumpkin Pie
– originally from the New York Times, and an inspiration for developing the family cookbook as she became tired of frequent calls for recipes. As she writes in 1986 in the introduction to the family cookbook “The beginnings of this book lie in the many phone calls I’ve received in the past few years, such as a recent one, collect from Oberlin, Ohio: “Can you give me the pumpkin pie recipe?”

Other memorable pies include Sue’s Key Lime Pie, bringing a hint of Florida to the festivities, Betsy’s Chocolate Pie, and the apple pies made from Steve’s apples.
